South San Francisco

If you’ve yet to experience South San Francisco, there’s no time like the present. The city sits beneath nationally registered historic place sign reading “South San Francisco, The Industrial City” in letters so large, they’re impossible to miss. And even as the site has lost it’s connection to the origin industry, it still remains a staple of the San Francisco Bay Area.

These days, South San Francisco is the “The Birthplace of Biotechnology.” Biotech leader Genentech settled here in the 1970s reinvigorating the cities economy. Location wise, South San Francisco borders Brisbane, Daly City, and Colma, despite it’s somewhat confusing moniker. South San Francisco has no relation to famous San Francisco to the north. They’re even in separate counties.

South San Francisco happens to be uniquely different. It’s a bit slower, more residential, and family- and student-oriented with a history of cross-town high school rivalries and residents who’ve lived here forever. Even neighboring San Francisco International Airport isn’t a deterrent to current and potential South San Francisco homeowners who enjoy the location for it’s convenience, community engagement, and small town feel.

Homes for sale in South San Francisco are spread across several neighborhoods east and west of Highway 101, which determine where students attend schools. Depending on where families live, high school aged students select either South San Francisco High School or El Camino High School. Middle schools are equally divided. South San Francisco also has a downtown area around Grand Avenue where there are an array of shops and restaurants.

Sign Hill has gained new life as a park where visitors can hike all the way up to the industrial city sign. The parks in South San Francisco are appealing for residents, visitors, children, and pets and continue to be some of the larger draws to this town. Beyond the parks, South San Francisco is also in an ideal location to move around the Bay with Highway 101 intersecting the city, Caltrain and BART stations nearby at the airport, and a ferry service that connects to the East Bay.

Whether you’re enjoying the eats downtown, viewing the holiday displays at Parkway Estates, or simply rooting on the neighborhood home team, South San Francisco has plenty to offer you and your family year-round. Find your new home for sale today.
